The environmental Sustainable Development Goals address the planet's most pressing ecological challenges — from clean water and energy to climate action, ocean conservation, and terrestrial ecosystem protection. These goals are central to ESG environmental reporting and corporate sustainability strategy.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognises that economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability are interconnected. Six SDGs focus primarily on environmental outcomes, though environmental considerations cut across all 17 goals. For businesses, these goals provide a framework for aligning environmental strategy with global priorities and communicating impact to stakeholders.
| SDG | Goal | Key Business Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation | Ensure availability and sustainable management of water | Water stewardship, wastewater management, water risk |
| SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy | Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable energy | Renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean technology |
| SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production | Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns | Circular economy, waste reduction, sustainable sourcing |
| SDG 13: Climate Action | Take urgent action to combat climate change | Emissions reduction, climate risk, adaptation |
| SDG 14: Life Below Water | Conserve and sustainably use the oceans | Marine pollution, sustainable fisheries, ocean health |
| SDG 15: Life on Land | Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems | Biodiversity, deforestation, land degradation |
The environmental SDGs map directly to ESG reporting frameworks. SDG 13 (Climate Action) aligns with TCFD, IFRS S2, and GHG Protocol requirements. SDG 15 (Life on Land) connects to TNFD and biodiversity disclosure. SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption) relates to circular economy metrics in GRI and ESRS. Companies can use SDG targets as a framework for setting environmental goals and measuring progress.
The GRI Standards provide specific mappings between disclosure topics and SDG targets. SASB industry standards identify which environmental SDGs are most material for each sector. The UN Global Compact's SDG Ambition programme helps companies set science-based targets aligned with SDG outcomes.
