Stock exchanges play a vital role in corporate governance through their listing rules, which set minimum standards for governance, disclosure, and shareholder protection.
Many exchanges have introduced ESG-specific listing requirements, including mandatory sustainability reporting (SGX, HKEX), climate disclosure (HKEX, LSE), and board diversity requirements (Nasdaq, HKEX). The Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative, a UN partnership programme, works with exchanges worldwide to promote ESG disclosure and sustainable finance. Over 100 exchanges have committed to the SSE, and many have published ESG reporting guidance for their listed companies.
