Control Variables:

  • Nitrogen (N) flow from atmosphere to biosphere (Tg N/year)
  • Phosphorus (P) flow to oceans (Tg P/year)

Safe Operating Space:

  • N: 62 Tg N/year (industrial and intentional biological fixation)
  • P: 11 Tg P/year (mined and applied to erodible soils)

Current Status:

  • N: ~150 Tg N/year (transgressed)
  • P: ~22 Tg P/year (transgressed)

Why This Matters

Excess nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers cause:

  • Eutrophication: Algal blooms, oxygen depletion (dead zones)
  • Coastal ecosystem degradation: Coral bleeds, fisheries collapse
  • Drinking water contamination: Nitrate pollution
  • Air pollution: N₂O (300x more potent GHG than CO₂), ammonia (PM2.5 formation)
