Employment creation and skills development is one of the most significant ways organisations contribute to community development and poverty reduction.
ISO 26000 emphasises that organisations should consider the impact of their investment and procurement decisions on employment creation, give preference to local suppliers and workers where practicable, and contribute to skills development and employability. Key practices include local hiring policies and targets, support for local supplier development, investment in vocational training and apprenticeships, support for entrepreneurship and small business development, just transition planning for workers affected by business changes, and collaboration with educational institutions on skills development. GRI 202 (Market Presence) requires disclosure of the proportion of senior management hired from the local community. GRI 203 (Indirect Economic Impacts) covers the employment creation impacts of infrastructure investments and services.
