Technology development and access encompasses the transfer, adaptation, and deployment of technologies that contribute to community development and sustainable development.
ISO 26000 identifies technology development and access as a key area of community involvement, recognising that organisations can contribute by developing technologies appropriate to local needs, facilitating technology transfer on fair and reasonable terms, supporting digital inclusion and bridging the digital divide, and building local technological capacity. The digital divide remains significant, with approximately 2.6 billion people still lacking internet access. Corporate contributions include investing in digital infrastructure in underserved areas, providing affordable access to technology and connectivity, supporting digital literacy and skills programmes, developing inclusive and accessible technologies, and sharing knowledge and intellectual property for development purposes.
