Property Rights

Property rights in the context of social responsibility encompass intellectual property rights, land rights, traditional knowledge, and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities over their resources and cultural heritage.

ISO 26000 emphasises that organisations should respect property rights, including physical and intellectual property, and should not engage in activities that undermine the property rights of others. Key issues include respect for intellectual property while ensuring access to essential technologies and medicines, recognition of indigenous peoples' rights to free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) regarding activities affecting their lands and resources, protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions, responsible land acquisition and avoidance of land grabbing, and fair compensation for use of others' property and resources.
