Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace encompasses the policies, practices, and culture that ensure all individuals have equal opportunities, are treated fairly, and can contribute fully regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, or other characteristics.
Research consistently demonstrates that diverse and inclusive organisations outperform their peers on innovation, decision-making quality, employee engagement, and financial performance. McKinsey's Diversity Wins report found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams were 25% more likely to achieve above-average profitability.
Gender equality remains a primary focus, encompassing pay equity, representation in leadership, parental leave, and anti-harassment policies. Racial and ethnic diversity addresses representation, pay gaps, and systemic barriers. Disability inclusion covers accessibility, reasonable accommodations, and inclusive design. LGBTQ+ inclusion encompasses non-discrimination policies, benefits equity, and inclusive workplace culture. Age diversity addresses ageism and intergenerational collaboration.
GRI 405 (Diversity and Equal Opportunity) requires disclosure of board and workforce diversity by gender, age group, and other indicators, as well as the ratio of basic salary and remuneration of women to men. GRI 406 (Non-discrimination) requires disclosure of incidents of discrimination and corrective actions. ESRS S1 requires comprehensive disclosure on diversity metrics, pay equity, and inclusion policies. The Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index and the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index provide benchmarking frameworks.
Leading organisations implement comprehensive DEI strategies that include measurable targets and accountability, inclusive recruitment and promotion practices, pay equity analysis and remediation, employee resource groups and mentoring programmes, inclusive leadership development, supplier diversity programmes, and regular measurement and transparent reporting of progress.
